Alltwen returning via Conwy Mountain

A challenging 5 mile loop that takes in some of the best views walking from Conwy. It first heads up along the edge of Conwy Mountain before climbing the very steep rocky route up on to Alltwen. It returns via climbing back over the summit of Conwy Mountain before descending the ridge into town.

Directions:

  1. Head downhill from the YHA. Immediately turn left onto Cadnant Park Road. Take the next left turn and head up Mountain Road.

  2. Shortly after the last houses on the right, follow the sign for the North Wales Coast Path and climb over a style. Follow this track up along the edge of Conwy Mountain and enjoy the views down the Conwy valley.

  3. Eventually this drops you onto the mountain track heading west towards Alltwen. Follow this track till you descend a gravelly track towards a gate with a stream/ford at the bottom with a farm track beyond. Alltwen is the mountain directly ahead of you.

  4. Turn left onto the farm track and follow it as it bend round towards Sychnant pass round the base of Alltwen.

  5. When the track bend sharply left, turn 90 degrees to the right up the steep rocky Alltwen climb. Follow this path up a tough climb and get the rewards of amazing views from the summit.

  6. Head off the summit in an easterly direction (towards Conwy Mountain) and follow the path that follows the ridge line down. This will bring you out at the ford/gate you came through earlier.

  7. After this gate, follow the path that goes up to the left and join the Cambrian Way. Follow this main path up towards the summit of Conwy mountain. Continue across the summit and descend the clambering rocks down the far side, this joins you onto the Conwy mountain ridge.

  8. Descend down the Conwy mountain ridge. Eventually you will rejoin Mountain Road, follow this down to Cadnant Park road, turn right and follow this up to the YHA.
